Boston aphasia classification is widely used for diagnostic and treatment evaluation purposes in individuals with brain damage and related language impairments. It is based on a limited number of specific measures of linguistic performance. A totally different approach to classify aphasia was suggested by a Russian neuropsychologist Alexander Luria.
Luria was an advocate of syndrome analysis and qualitative identification of a disrupted common neuropsychological factor underlying a patient’s deficit and manifested in different cognitive domains. A new call has been recently made to merge the two traditions and enrich it with achievements of modern (psycho)linguistics. In this talk, theoretical basis of Luria’s aphasia classification will be discussed and compared to the Boston tradition, with particular attention to language-specific assessment tools needed for Russian and Greek.
